April 2024 – pupils and staff from across the Frank Field Education Trust (FFET) embarked on a life-changing journey to Chengdu, China, for an immersive experience that promised to be both educational and transformative.
Departing from London Heathrow Airport – pupils from Handforth Grange Primary School, The Ellesmere Port C of E College, and Birches Head Academy set off on an adventure bursting with cultural exploration and learning.
During the 7-day adventure, pupils were fully immersed into Chinese culture and traditions. One major highlight of the trip was the visit to The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Pandas, where pupils learned about these iconic animals and gained insight into the conservation efforts and breeding for giant pandas, red pandas, and other rare animals.
Scarlett from Year 8 at The Ellesmere Port C of E College, expressed her delight, describing it as “truly incredible experience”. She particularly cherished the visiting the panda sanctuary, where she observed various species of pandas.
For three days during the trip, pupils attended lessons at partner schools including: The Tianfu No3. Middle School and The Hupan Road Middle School. Here, pupils participated in a variety of classes and lessons, including Traditional Chinese Painting, Pottery, Textiles, Calligraphy, Ceramics, Rock Climbing and Martial Arts. The immersive hands-on experience allowed pupils not only to learn from their Chinese peers but also forge meaningful connections through cultural exchange.
Charlie from Year 8 at The Ellesmere Port C of E College described the trip as a fantastic experience. He was particularly intrigued by the differences between the school they visited in China and those in the UK.
Mila, a pupil from Handforth Grange Primary School said: “I found the pottery activity and using the pottery wheel really enjoyable. It has boosted my confidence to explore new experiences… I really loved seeing the pandas!”
Each school visit included a tour, a welcome ceremony hosted by the school principal, and the exchange of gifts, symbolising the bonds of friendship and understanding between the pupils.
Howard, a pupil from Handforth Grange Primary School said: “I really enjoyed meeting other children in my class and making new friends. Visiting Peter’s home and tasting his parents’ food was a highlight.” Howard also appreciated the thoughtful gifts exchanged among the children.
Rhys, Year 10 pupil from Birches Head Academy said: “The highlight of my trip was visiting the Chinese school and experiencing the different systems and routines compared to UK schools… The pupils treated us like celebrities and we were welcomed with so much respect and high esteem!”
“This trip has been truly transformational for our pupils” said Andrea Booth, Head Teacher at Handforth Grange Primary School. “It has provided children with a deeper understanding of Chinese culture, fostered cross-cultural connections, and broadened their perspectives of the world around them. We are immensely proud of all the pupils for their engagement and enthusiasm throughout this unforgettable experience. We eagerly anticipate developing our relationship further and extending a warm welcome to Chinese students at our schools in the UK.”
As the pupils returned home, they brought back with them memories and experiences that will continue to shape their academic and personal growth.
During the visit, UK schools participated in the Natural Ecology Academic Seminar, an event of significant importance. During this seminar, Head Teacher, Andrea Booth led a presentation addressing environmental challenges in the UK, particularly focusing on combatting the global issue of plastic and waste.
One of these lessons, led by Miss Amy Lockett from Handforth Grange, delved into the theme of sustainability, comparing the initiatives undertaken by our schools. This event was attended by various dignitaries, including the Deputy Director of the Institute of Teacher Development, alongside educators from over 100 schools in Chengdu.
The study and exchange journey concluded with a heartfelt farewell ceremony at the Red Scarf Picture Book Gallery. British students reflected on their personal growth and experiences, expressing their well wishes through the exchange of small gifts. Denzel, a Year 10 student at The Ellesmere Port C of E College, described the experience as ‘transformative’ leaving an enduring mark on his life.
Lexi K, Year 8 from Birches Head Academy said: “Going to China was a life-changing experience and I would love to go again. My favourite part was seeing all the pandas… I loved seeing how they eat sleep and play… I have fulfilled a lifetime ambition.”
